The summer of 2023 brought unexpected challenges for millions of air passengers in Europe: around 115.8 million people were affected by flight problems, including 11.3 million from Germany alone.
These figures show an increase in delays and flight cancellations compared to previous years before the pandemic, when an average of 27 percent of passengers were affected, compared to 36 percent last year. The burden is particularly evident in Frankfurt, the German airport with the most flight problems, as an analysis by AirHelp shows.
In a European comparison, Serbia leads with an extremely high delay rate of 50 percent, followed by Malta with 46.6 percent and Greece with 43.5 percent. These countries have been in the spotlight for the first time because of their challenging flight conditions, which were also problematic in the years before the pandemic. In contrast, Finland, Norway and Lithuania are the most reliable countries, with significantly lower delay rates of around 20 percent.
While Germany saw a slight improvement in its 2022-2023 education statistics, it remains a significant player in the European context. Frankfurt Airport in particular regularly tops the list of delay rates, although a slight slowdown was recorded last year. In contrast, Stuttgart Airport emerged as a surprise leader in terms of punctuality.
Despite a return to pre-pandemic levels in passenger numbers, high delay rates have become a worrying norm at European airports. The aviation and tourism industries must therefore address these challenges to ensure passenger satisfaction and enforce legal claims in the event of flight problems.
